India has taken a major step in defence reform by allowing private companies to manufacture fighter jets domestically. This move, part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, aims to strengthen the Indian Air Force and reduce reliance on imports.
The Defence Ministry recently approved the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project, a fifth-generation stealth fighter, with private firms invited to participate in development and production. Companies like VEM Technologies and Tata Aerospace are already contributing, with the former supplying fuselage components for the Tejas Mk1A and the latter building a facility to produce Airbus C-295 transport aircraft.
This will boost domestic aerospace ecosystem and bring in new players to contribute towards the mission.
This policy shift is expected to boost indigenous defence manufacturing and enhance India’s strategic autonomy.
